The Sonic Artwork of John Coulter
While the Sun Shines (2016)
25-Channel Acousmatic
International Award: Metamorphosis 2016
It wasn't until his mid-40s that John recognised the wisdom contained in the farming-related ethics he grew up with, to appreciate what his father tried to share by exposing the family to life in the country. The saying ‘make hay while the sun shines’ reflects the notion that 'if you have an opportunity to do something, do it before the opportunity expires'.
Green (2015)
For Tree-o-phone and Live Electronics
The live sonic art genre encompasses mixed acoustic/electroacoustic sound sources in live performance (also known as live electronics) and is a true multi-modal art form encompassing at least sonic, visual and dramaturgical components within its artistic remit. The genre presents the human body in gestural timeframes as the origin of all music, and the natural world together with environmental timeframes as transcendent.
Aurora's Harp (2021)
Environmentally Activated Sound Sculpture
Environmental sound sculpture is an art form that is focussed on converting the natural outpouring of energies found in nature (wind, rain, sunshine, water, wave motion, etc.) into sound. The effect is often profound - a complex musical experience 'played' by nature that also provides a special lens through which we are able to see and hear complex and beautiful patterns that are normally hidden from us.
Mouth Piece (2008)
For Voice and Live Electronics
The work makes use of an electronic device that thranforms ordinary speech into musical tones. The device works by repeatedly recording and playing back vocalisations through a small speaker that is located inside the mouth cavity.
